This does work really well to remove the odors and tastes from ice. Be sure to dump all your current ice when you put the charcoal filter into the freezer the first time. The odors get into the water, not the ice, so you have to get rid of all your smelly ice first.
I ordered one of these for the office and it really worked well to fix the ice odors and off taste. We kept a baking soda box in the freezer and changed it out regularly but it didn't seem to help - the Ice Aid fixed the problems with the first new trays of ice.
A couple of employees liked it so much they had me order them one and they report it fixed their freezers right up at home.
One potential problem:The original Ice Aid was supplied in the plastic container as shown in the Amazon picture.Later orders were supplied in a cardboard box container - no more plastic. I guess this is more "environmentally friendly" but it does not appear as sturdy nor does it SEEM to hold as much charcoal. I exchanged e-mails with the company that makes these and they said the cardboard was the new design and they no longer made the plastic cased model. They said the cardboard model might not last as long as the plastic case ones did.So take that into account when you order - the glowing reviews here and elsewhere are on the plastic model and few, if any, on the new cardboard design. The cardboard design did work fine out of the box, but no idea how long it will last.
Finally, this is sold here as a Whirlpool part - which I guess it is, but the Ice Aid is made and sold by another company and is marketed not just via Whirlpool. You can also buy activated charcoal from other manufacturers that should work just as well as the Ice Aid and maybe for less - but these are usually in a different form.
