I guess I was lucky compared to others, I got 18 months out of it. The temp display went out and I had the ticking noise that other reviews mentioned. It could not handle a warmer room (couldn't keep the temp I had set it at) but simply moving elsewhere solved the problem. I'm glad I got it on clearance and only spent $50, but I don't recommend it at any other price. I wonder if ANY of the smaller free standing units last, at least one that is affordable.
