I suppose it's too much to expect that a cross-referenced part number would actually be an exact replacement on a 15-yr-old refrigerator. As it turned out, I had to drill new holes in the old sheet metal to mount the thing because its footprint was slightly different. Once that was done, it worked fine and fixed the problem.
