LG : LK45C CustomCube Automatic Ice Maker Review

LG : LK45C CustomCube Automatic Ice MakerThe ice maker is very nice. It works and works very well. The included instructions didn't seem to match what my fridge had, but it was close enough that I was able to improvise.

The only gripe is that the sound it makes when the water runs to fill is very loud and drives my wife nuts. We're used to the sound of the dropping cubes, but we've never heard another one make this much racket when filling up. It's not a big deal though, once the tray is full, it doesn't fill anymore until it needs to make more cubes.

Maytag : MBF2256KEW 22 Cu. Ft. Bottom Freezer Refrigerator - White Review

Maytag : MBF2256KEW 22 Cu. Ft. Bottom Freezer Refrigerator - WhiteFour months over warranty on this $1200 list behemoth (Maytag lists it as 21.9 cu ft), and on the third time I rolled it forward to sweep and mop, the refrigerator stops working. Entirely. No air movement. No cooling. It's only below room temp because the freezer below cools it through the insulation between the compartments! The freezer is icing up, too.

The fridge is roomy, and the freezer design with sliding shelves is nice, but financially, this may be (if we're lucky) like renting a fridge for $100/month! We might have been better off renting to own...

It's probably a good thing Maytag has discontinued the model, since other people have had a similar problem (move it to clean up and it breaks).

GE GSL22JFXLB Energy Star 22.0 Cu. Ft. Side-By-Side Refrigerator (Clean Steel) Review

GE GSL22JFXLB Energy Star 22.0 Cu. Ft. Side-By-Side RefrigeratorI've always wanted a side by side, and finally saved up enough to purchase this one. I was told it was a good refrigerator, well made and all that. It did work for about 10 months before it started blitzing. Lucky for me it was before the warranty ended, not so lucky for me & 4 to 5 visits from the store repairman I believe my problems still have not been resolved. The weird thing is, my model number is GSH22JSXSA, yet its the same side by side using the model number GSH22JSXSS. No repair person can figure out why my model number ends in SA instead of SS, and yes my side by side is stainless steel so that's not it. One repair guy said he believes it is just a newer model as an explaination for this diversion, however plug the model in and nothing, absolutely nothing comes up as that model number. Ok, on to the problems. My s/s started freezing up every thing inside, and melt occured along the front of the door and along the sides which would of course freeze over. I had frozen drips hanging from the shelves and snow covered foods so thick you had to melt it off by running under warm water to know what was in those packages. The first repairman said the situation inside was our fault and occured due to leaving the door open. However, that was not the case, but he over-rode any thing I had to say to the contrary; was rude and very disrespectful. I work or probably would have noticed something that was happening with the s/s sooner. One day during the weekend I happened to open up the freezer section and actually felt heat. Now that was odd. I noticed moisture along the walls of the freezer section as every thing was melting and no evaporation of this moisture occured. The freezer section was really hot towards the top above the ice bin, melting the icecubes causing the half ice and water to coagulate around the auger. The defroster/heater wasn't turning off in a timely manner and melting everything. Weirder yet, after this thaw or what I called intermittent freezer hot flashes, the freezer would go to the opposite extreme of too cold refreezing all the foods stored there even at a setting of 1. Guess what, the door wasn't left opened and hey GE I discovered it wasn't our fault. On several occasions I smelled a burning scent and when I opened the freezer during an especially strong smell of something burning, the heat was more intense from within and the light bulb inside blew up. Not just burn out, it exploded and shards of tiny pieces of glass were on my food in the freezer and my feet on the floor. I still don't know why this happened, other than what the repair person said that the heaterwasn't working right and stays on too long.Heat rises and ice melts. He didn't seem concerned that this might be a safety issue, the defroster running too long doesn't explain the burning scent and why the light bulb disintegrated. Not to mention what could have happened if I had young children under foot. Mother board replaced, thermostat & sensor replaced, heater replaced, ice cube maker replaced. Once these things were fixed, well sort of, after months of ice cubes melting to the auger so ice didn't dispense I was advised after the last fix that the cubes should dispense just fine. Well the ice cubes still aren't being dispensed. I noticed after the last fix last Friday, ice cubes are not melting, staying separate, and so far no intense heat aka hot flashes. I can't say the freezer is running optimally, not yet... its still running colder than it should even at a setting of 1 "but" I haven't noticed burning smells recently, no snow is covering my foods, there are no frozen drips hanging from the shelves or icecycles along the sides and front. Its only been 3 days so all I can say is we will see. But I have to admit, I'm a bit afraid of this appliance, whether it will possibly heat up again and maybe cause a fire, I worry that the light bulb will explode again, I wonder if it will ever work like it should, & I'm hoping I didn't waste the money I spent to buy it. I had a choice, and picked this GE model out of many other brands. All my appliances are GE and all have been quality. GE, what happened with this s/s, what's going on?

Magic Chef 4.4 cu ft Refrigerator MCBR445B2 Review

Magic Chef 4.4 cu ft Refrigerator MCBR445B2We bought this compact refrigerator (in white) about 5 days ago at Home Depot and it seems to be working very well. However, as with any appliance it would have helped to know things like when you buy it you should try totransport it vertically or you will have to wait 4 hours before starting it up (so the refrigerant can settle I guess). Also, they say in the manual but nowhere else that you need 5 inches of space between the sides of the fridge and the wall, so this might not be best for a tight or "built-in" space. The manual also says not to use this unit with an extension cord, so again placement is critical. It is very quiet which is something I really wanted. We looked at a lot of models and a lot of reviews and so far we're very satisfied.

GE Profile : PSHS6RGXSS Refrigerator Review

GE Profile : PSHS6RGXSS RefrigeratorThe GE Profile Stainless Refrigerator looks and works great, although buyers who have never before owned a full side-by-side should be aware of issues inherent in the design.

First, the good:the door shelves are deep and adjustable, so you can make sure you have at least one area where liter bottles of soda or wine bottles with corks sticking up fit. Both the meat/cheese and the vegetable/fruit drawers are ample size, with the lower Turbo Cool drawer having less depth but still offering additional space. The tempered glass shelves are sturdy and easily removed for cleaning and height adjustment.I've had an incredibly full refrigerator, with dishes stacked on top of each other, without any problem with the weight on the glass.Separate temperature adjustments for the freezer and refrigerator are accurate.

The freezer has some rubber-coated wire shelves and pull-out drawers. The water dispenser/ice maker feeds through the top of the freezer, so the top shelf has limited room.

The drawbacks?Well, a side-by-side has a narrow freezer, which means you cannot fit, say, frozen pizza boxes inside unless you remove a shelf and stick it on its side. The same is true for the refrigerator side -- anything wide is not going to fit.

On a different note, the dispensed water is never cold, even though it technically feeds up through the freezer door; I guess this means that the freezer itself is extremely well-insulated.Still, I'd like cooler water.Of course, the cube and crushed ice dispensers can cool the glass of water instantly.

The brushed steel exterior shows fingerprints, although not as readily as a mirrored finish will.I recommend getting Magic Complete Stainless Steel Cleaner, 14-Ounce (Pack of 6) or something similar to clean the surface.

If you are in love with a complete side-by-side design, this refrigerator is a great choice. If you want additional freezer width but still want side-by-side refrigerator doors, check out French door models with a lower, pull-out freezer.

RT801 Digital Fridge/Freezer Alarm Thermometer by ThermoWorks Review

RT801 Digital Fridge/Freezer Alarm Thermometer by ThermoWorksWe purchased this because our teenagers would sometimes not get our upright freezer door closed and the items in the door (usually ice cream) would melt and create a huge mess.We purchased this so that if the door was not completely closed it would alert us with an alarm. So far this hasn't happened, however, when putting groceries up and having the door open longer than usual the alarm does go off until the correct temperature range is achieved. We placed the probe on the top shelf of the door closer to the hinged side and placed the unit on top of the freezer so that the wire wouldn't get tangled when placing items in the freezer. So far it seems to work well.

Orka Fridge and Freezer Thermometer Review

Orka Fridge and Freezer ThermometerAfter recently having a refrigerator/freezer go out on us, my wife and I wanted a reliable way to monitor the new refrigerator and freezer temperatures, without needing to open the doors of the device to check an internal thermometer. We also wanted a device that would sound an alarm if temperatures exceed those that are safe for perishable food items. The first product we tried (which was highly recommended to us) was a Chaney Instrument 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer. Our experience with that device was nothing short of horrible, so we decided that we would have to resort to a thermometer with wired probes. After looking all over the Internet for a thermometer that seemed reliable, we decided to give the Orka A75014 Refrigerator and Freezer Thermometer (designed by Mastrad, in France, but made in China) a try.

This product is packaged very nicely and includes an instruction manual that is easy to read and understand. Two AAA batteries (included) must be installed in the back of the main control/display unit. There are two temperature sensor probes, one white and one blue, which have suction cups attached to them. The white sensor, which has a single snowflake icon on it, gets installed in the refrigerator compartment. The blue sensor, which has three snowflake icons on it, gets installed in the freezer compartment.I quickly found that the suction cup would not stick well in the freezer; something that Mastrad/Orka should have discovered during quality testing of this product. The instruction manual suggests that you just let the freezer probe dangle or sit amongst the frozen food items in your freezer.Hmm...sloppy but it appears to be the only other alternative to the non-sticking suction cup.The instructions advise you to leave the alarm function disabled for the first 30 minutes, after installation, to allow the temperature probes to adjust to their new environments.I found that it took about 35 minutes for the display unit to show the correct temperatures. When tested against a trusty analog temperature gauge, I found the Orka A75014 thermometer accuracy to be spot on.

The main LCD display unit measures roughly 5-1/4" W x 1-3/4" H x 3/4" D.As you look at the display, there are two buttons on the left side. The top button toggles between showing the minimum and maximum temps of the fridge compartment, and the min/max temps for the freezer compartment. The bottom button is used to clear the min/max settings. On the right side of the display is a little window, which shows the selected alarm mode. The alarm mode switch is on the far right edge of the control unit, and can be switched between Off, LED, and Beep modes. On the back of the display/control unit is a switch, for selecting Celsius or Fahrenheit temperature display. The back of the device also includes two magnets, for attaching the display unit directly to your refrigerator/freezer, and a little flip-out stand, if you prefer to sit the display unit on top of your fridge. The kit also includes two small squares of Velcro, for attaching the device to a non-magnetic refrigerator. The sensor probes are hardwired directly to the display/control unit, so there is no way to disconnect them.To install the probes into your refrigerator and freezer compartments, the manual suggests that you feed the probes and attached wires between the door and the body of the refrigerator/freezer, on the hinge side. The wires are very thin and flat, so they do not interfere with the door seals at all.Since the wires are permanently attached to the display/control unit, I would suggest mounting the device close to the area where your wires are running into the refrigerator and freezer compartments, so that you don't have wires strung across the front of our refrigerator door.

Although I am quite impressed with the overall design and accuracy of this device, it definitely has some very strong shortcomings. Here is a list of the Pros and Cons for this product.

Pros
****
-Digital LCD Display, Shows Refrigerator Temp on Left and Freezer Temp on Right
-Displays Min/Max Temps for Fridge and Freezer
-High Temperature Alarm Has Selections For Audible Beeping or Visual Blinking LED
-Has Temporary (less than 30 minutes) and Permanent Alert Modes
-Switchable Between C° and F° Temperature Display Modes
-Visual Low Battery Indicator
-Easy To Install and Use
-Measures Temperatures Down to -40° F/C

Cons
****
-Temperature Alarm Set-Points Are Factory Set and Cannot Be Changed By User
-LCD Is Sometimes Hard To Read (No Backlight Option)
-Alarm Is Very Soft (No Volume Adjustment) - Sounds Like Cheap Travel Alarm Clock
-Magnets On Back Are Not Strong Enough (Slides Too Easily On Refrigerator Door)
-Suction Cup Probe Mounting Doesn't Work Well, Especially In Freezer (clips would be better)
-No Time/Date Stamp for Alarm Events

The pros are self-explanatory but I wanted to explain the cons in further detail.First, the low temperature alarm set-points are factory set at 0°C (32°F) and 8°C (46.4°F) for the refrigerator, and -18°C (-0.4°F) for the freezer. There is no way to change these, which is very unfortunate.32°F makes sense for the refrigerator minimum temp, but 46.4°F for the maximum temp is dangerously high. Also, -0.4°F is a little low for a maximum freezer temp, in my opinion. Most self-defrosting freezers can show an increase of up to 20°F during the defrost cycle. This means that your alarm will be going off any time the defrost cycle is running. Therefore my wife and I have deactivated the beeping alarm and only have the blinking LED selected.Unfortunately this means that we may not notice a problem with the refrigerator/freezer right away. Also, the LCD display can be difficult to see, depending on how much light is in the room when you are reading it.Although I know it would drain the batteries quicker, a pushbutton backlight option would be a welcome addition. The alarm beeper is also extremely quiet and has no volume adjustment, thus making it very difficult to hear from a couple of rooms away.It sounds a lot like one of those cheap travel alarm clocks. The magnets on the back of the display/control base are fairly week, allowing the device to easily slide down the refrigerator door. The suction cups that are built onto the temperature sensor probes have proven to be inadequate, especially in the freezer compartment.Suction cups do not hold well when wet and especially in extremely cold temperatures.Obviously these conditions are common in refrigerators and freezers.Spring clips would be a far better mounting option, in my humble opinion. And finally, there is no time/date stamp for alarm events, so it can be very difficult to track down exactly when a specific high temp event occurred. However, the unit does count how many hours and minutes have accumulated since the displayed alarm event was activated, up to 99 hours and 59 minutes (about 4 days and 4 hours). So if you go on vacation for a week and a power outage occurred while you were gone, it is very possible that the alert time will expire by the time you return and check the display.

Overall I am extremely happy with the Orka A75014 Digital Refrigerator & Freezer Thermometer.I have learned to deal with most of the shortcomings of this device, but I am not happy with the fact that I cannot leave the audible alarm on, due to it going off every time my fridge/freezer goes into self-defrost mode. The factory locked alarm settings are too restrictive and should be user programmable. This device is obviously not designed to work well with self-defrosting refrigerator/freezers, which is what the majority of these appliances are in the U.S.But the ease of installation and accuracy of this device helps to ease the disappointment of this design oversight.Considering the relatively low cost and the dependable accuracy of this thermometer, I do recommend it.However, hang on to your receipt and original packaging, in case you find that you cannot live with the cons and decide to return it.Hopefully Mastrad will design an Orka digital fridge/freezer thermometer that offers user selectable alarm set-points in a future model release.

MIU #90062 Commercial Freezer Thermometer Review

MIU #90062 Commercial Freezer ThermometerThis is a very handy gadget for me because I can monitor the temps in my fridge in different places to see where the colder and hotter spots are. It is just the right size so as not to take up too much space, and the dial is easily readable.Build quality is good, no complaints. As for accuracy, I compared it against a different brand right next to each other and the readings are similar so I will have to assume it is accurate. I'm not using it for critical applications anyway, just making sure the fridge is cold enough for safe food storage.I would buy this again.

Taylor 507 Connoissuer Line Freezer- Refrigerator Thermometer Review

Taylor 507 Connoissuer Line Freezer- Refrigerator ThermometerThis thermometer seems well designed and constructed. It has what seems to be a silicone covered foot that sits on the shelf where you put it. I bought it as paired with the similar oven thermometer, and the readings in our side-by-side checked out at exactly 40 degrees in the frig and 8 degrees in the freezer, so we'll want to adjust the freezer down a tad.

All in all, it's very easy to read, and is a good way to assure maximum food safety and minmimum energy wastage. I think it's quite accurate and fits in the hand very well. It's heavy enough not to tip over easily. If you're like us and have multiple refrigerators, it's easily moved from one to another.

Chaney Instrument Wireless Refrigerator & Freezer Thermometer, 00985 Review

Chaney Instrument Wireless Refrigerator & Freezer Thermometer, 00985We bought this set to monitor our new wine cellar. One of the two remote sensors works fine, the other was dead on arrival--installed multiple sets of batteries and the power light stayed off. While the concept is very good and the components feel solid, quality is apparently spotty. With the magnets on the back of the monitor, I put it on top of the cabinet, which works out well. I wanted a sensor on the top and another on the bottom shelves since the whites and desserts on the bottom should be cooler. The working sensor clipped securely onto the top wire rack.

I emailed the Amazon seller about the problem and was initially given the option of packing up and sending the whole set back for an exchange, or trying to get the manufacturer (Chaney) to replace the defective sensor. A few emails later and the seller volunteered to open a package and send me a replacement sensor. I am very impressed with this seller, DTMdirect, and would certainly buy from him (Don) again. His price was the best I found, packaging was very good, shipment was very fast, and his email responses were fast and cordial.

I'm not altogether happy with this product yet, since obviously the quality control needs improvement. Therefore I give 4 stars. If both sensors worked out of the box I may have given 5 stars. I do recommend this item and the seller.

CDN Audio Visual Refrigerator Freezer Alarm Review

CDN Audio Visual Refrigerator Freezer AlarmThe thermometer and probe seem to be well made but it didn't work very well with my upright freezer. As others mentioned, the alarm is not loud enough unless you're fairly close to the unit but the biggest problem is the probe wire.It is round, about 2 mm in diameter and my freezer door will not seal tightly around it.Within 2 days, my manual defrost freezer had a block of ice forming where the wire came through the seal due to humid air leakage.I've seen other units that use thinner flat wire which I suspect would work better.

Refrigerator/Freezer Thermometer Review

Refrigerator/Freezer ThermometerI had a problem with our freezer and wanted to get thermometers to confirm that all was working right.

These fit the bill and were price right.

They have color coded areas on the face that show the proper temps and make it very easy to visually confirm temps whenever you open the door.

Taylor Professional Freezer-Refrigerator Thermometer with 3-Inch Dial Review

Taylor Professional Freezer-Refrigerator Thermometer with 3 inch DialLet me preface this by saying that at $4.40 there isn't much risk in buying this thermometer.Given Amazon's great customer service I'm sure I can return it but it's not really worth sending it back.I've read the previous comments and 5-star ratings and I'm left wondering if anyone else checked the accuracy before commenting.I checked it out at with accurate digital and analog thermometers at room temperature of 68 degrees, at refrigerator temperature of 36 degrees, and at a freezer temperature of-2 degrees. In all cases I found the Taylor Professional Freezer-Refrigerator Thermometer to read 3 degrees lower than actual temperature. There does not seem to be any way to adjust the dial with the exception of taking it apart and moving the faceplate (not sure if that is possible without breaking it).I gave it only one star for just this reason; that you cannot calibrate the unit for error, not for the inaccuracy itself.

It does have a big dial and is easy to read but I think at the critical temperature of a refrigerator it is important to be accurate.I realize there may be many people who do not have the equipment to check out the accuracy as I do, but there is a significant difference in storing food at 37 degrees F rather than at 40.

So if you're agreeable to mentally normalizing the temp (as I will do) when you read it, I suppose you'd be satisfied with it given it's low cost. That last statement presupposes that the one you buy has the same inaccuracy as mine.Who knows, the one you get might be "right on" but how would you know that without calibrating it?

Chaney Instrument 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Alarm Set Review

Chaney Instrument 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Alarm SetWe bought this alarm because we have young kids who love to be independent and help out by getting their own ice and food.Since our indoor freezer is a bottom pull-out, they can get into it easily. We also have an upright freezer in the garage. We had one week where a freezer was left open three times. This alarm has helped tremendously.

We are using both sensors in the two freezers. They come pre-programmed with min/max settings, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer. It is very simple to change those settings though and the directions were clear.

I really like that it has a fifteen-minute delay before the alarm sounds. That is, the temperature has to be above the set point for 15 minutes before the alarm is triggered. That feature prevents false alarms when a 3-year old is having trouble deciding which ice cube is the perfect one for his juice.

I wish I had known that for freezer use you need to use lithium batteries (AA) as they work at lower temperatures versus alkaline. We didn't have any on hand and so had to wait to install the units.Extra trips to the store are a pain and I would have just ordered 4 (2 for ea) when I bought the unit if I had known.
