Haier Compact Refridgerator and Freezer Review

Pros:
-decent interior space
-looks okay
-has a freezer compartment

Cons:
-way too loud for any bedroom (wakes you up at night)
-almost always on
-tendency for freezer contents to suddenly melt at random times (even on power 4, without ever opening the fridge throughout the day)
-water spills due to aforementioned freezer melting
-turning it on for first time will fill room with fumes that cause headache and bloody-nose, and these fumes are present for about 2 days (even if you follow the instructions in manual, and keep unit turned off for 24 hours in upright position before first using it). They could get sued mightily for this, as we almost passed out from these fumes.
-runs super hot - will warm up a room like having two additional computers (about 10 degrees f.)
-makes obnoxious clicking sound when turning on/off throughout the day or night
-always makes annoying "breathing" sounds
-carton-holder in door can't fit a standard-sized carton (seriously, this is ridiculous)
-machinery in back looks like third-rate transformers that uncle Bob duct-taped together

Danby DCR326BSL 3.1-Cu.Ft. Dual Door Compact Fridge with Freezer, Black/Stainless Review

I've had this refrigerator about three months and it works fine. However, when moving it, I apparently lifted it by the top and broke a plastic part that connects the top to the unit. Warranty doesn't cover plastic parts after 30 days. They gave me phone number to order replacement parts but I gave up after being on hold for one hour.

Emerson 1.8 Cu. Ft Compact Refrigerator Review

If you've ever tried one of those small thermo-electric plate refrigerators (as I have), you may have been disappointed by its cooling capability.Sadly, the technology that allows them to be so small also limits how cold they get. They can keep things cool, but they don't make things truly cold.So, if you like your milk to remain unspoiled and your drinks to be icy cold, compressor refrigerators are still the way to go.This Emerson CR180 compact refrigerator runs on a compressor system.

That said, let's start with what everyone wants to know first:How cold does this unit get?

I've had this refrigerator running for a week and these are the temperatures I've measured:

Setting number 6......4

Door..............34.....43 degrees Fahrenheit
Middle Shelf....33.....42
Freezer..........18.....26

Setting number 6 is the coldest.The manufacturer's guide states that setting number 3 should suffice for most people, but I like things on the colder side, so I keep it between 4 and 5.

Overall, this refrigerator runs quietly.There is, however, a soft "plink" every couple of minutes as the cooling system kicks in. It's barely noticeable with all the noise where I work, but it is something to keep in mind if you plan to use the refrigerator in a quiet environment.

The exterior dimensions are 18 inches high x 18.5 inches wide x 20 inches deep.It fits nicely under my desk, and despite the manufacturer's warning not to put heavy objects on top, I do occasionally use it as a footrest.

The freezer holds one frozen dinner (maybe two if you remove the cardboard boxes and just slide the plastic-wrapped meal trays in).The picture above where they've packed the refrigerator full is a little misleading in that they've put food on the middle shelf directly below the freezer, which is where the drip tray goes.Also, the door takes up more space than you might think.Despite this, it's pretty roomy.For me, there's more than enough room to keep a couple of sandwiches, a few bottles of juice and soda, a frozen dinner, and some salad fixings for the week.

If you plan to purchase this refrigerator online, be sure to ask the seller first how they're going to pack it.The manufacturer's retail box is definitely not sufficient for shipping.There is only a thin (1/2 inch) layer of styrofoam on the top and bottom, and none at all on the sides.Most importantly, there is no protection whatsoever for the most delicate part of the refrigerator...the exposed coolant system in back.With the way most shipping services throw their packages around, chances are good that the refrigerator will be dented, and maybe even inoperable, on arrival.So, be sure to ask the seller if they'll double-box it with appropriate packing materials.

A few other notes:

- Defrosting is manual, not automatic.

- The door is reversible, so you can make it swing whichever direction you want.

- There's no lock and no handle, just a recessed door top (I personally prefer this, as it's one less mechanical part to break with extended use).

- The U.S. government energy guide has rated this refrigerator at an estimated yearly electricity use of 315 kWh, with an estimated yearly operating cost of 33.50 dollars.

Soleus Air MC-88M Indoor/Outdoor Party Refrigerator, Silver Review

This is a unique product in it's price range. We wanted a deck fridge ready for outdoor use and this appeared to be just that. As always, Amazon service was fantastic but after 3 months of service, the device began to run noisily and quit working altogether shortly after that. We were startled to examine the warranty service offered by Soleus Air and learned that in order to have warranty coverage we'd need to ship this device back to California which cost us $147. This is half the cost of the device and was a big disappointment. I suspect the value in this device will be fully realized if the company returns a unit that lasts more than a few months. If this unit fails again, it will be out of warranty (for what that is worth given the return shipping costs) and we'll likely have a fancy stainless steel ice bucket instead of a powered cooler. The physical appearance and functional design is attractive and the unit was the talk of our summer gatherings just beware of quality and the finer points of the warranty and hope your's lasts longer than ours did.

Danby DCR412BLS 4.3-Cu.Ft. Compact Refrigerator with Freezer Review

I bought this recently for 150 at the dept store with the 'bullseye' logo.I have the stainless steel grey and black version.So far i'm happy with it as it does get cold enough to make ice in its mini-freezer compartment, and that was when i turned the temp control to the 2/3 setting(not even the max setting!).So make no mistake, it does get cold enough to make ice.If you're looking for a mini-fridge, temporary fridge, second fridge, single-person fridge, then this seems like a great value.I've only had it for a few weeks now, so i'll update my review if anything 'majorly bad' happens in the future(trust me, i'll be upset enough to come back and write a poor follow up if this fridge starts to breakdown in any way).

Finally, the energy guide.The energy guide included with the fridge says it uses 343 of 345 kwh, and that its yearly operating costs is $28.That 343/345 is very high, but it says it is measured against other comparable fridges up to 4.4 cubic feet.This is a 4.3 cubic ft mini-fridge, so obviously it would be near the max. Other 4.3/4.4 mini-fridges use about the same amount of energy.And the Danby actually used about the same amount as a 3.3 cubic ft Avanti mini-fridge i was looking at.I don't have a bias towards one brand or the other(this ain't Ford vs Chevy, PS3 vs XBOX 360), simply just letting you know what the energy guide stats are.So compare and shop around before making a decision if this one is right for you.I have it, and think it's a good purchase(one of the biggest mini-fridges with a mini-freezer compartment!) and a good value(one of the cheapest prices for a mini-fridge).

(edit: almost 2 yrs later, still works fine.although i have to defrost a little more than i'd like to.also, you can't fit a large pizza box in this thing.just saying)

Compact Freezer Refrigerator with Lock - Stainless Steel Review

The EdgeStar has much to boast of: it is lightweight, easy to carry and move, roomy, attractive, and versatile as both a refrigerator and (marginally) as a freezer. Setup is simple, and the price is excellent. Strongly tainting this appliance however, is a thermostat dial which is either incompetently designed, incompetently calibrated, or both

Before continuing, let's not fail to note the advertised description for this product: "Just turn the thermostat to select the appropriate temperature for your application!"

Falling with equal snugness on the Things That Make You Go Duh list is the instruction manual telling us that "The knob has markings to indicate the relative temperature settings, but in general, turning the knob counter-clockwise corresponds to colder temperatures."

So if we turn the dial one way, it gets colder. Turn it the other way it gets warmer.We can handle that. The markings on the dial bear witness to and confirm this elegant conception of appliance design:

regrigeration------>MIN......OFF.....MAX

freezing----------->MIN......||......MAX

Interesting then, that in practice there is *no* temperature change in the freezer when dialed to "MIN", or dialed to "MAX". I measure both at a steady 20 degrees.

With some playing, one discoversthat colder temperatures are achieved, erratically, within the petite 1.5 millimeter space between the two vertical lines separating "Min" and "Max".

Moving counter clockwise per instructions along the dial after the arrow marked "Freezer", the temperatures I normally get are, in order:

20 (when dialed to "Min")
15 (when dialed to the left vertical line)
4 or 12 degrees (when between the two vertical lines)
10 (when dialed to the right vertical line)
20 (when dialed to "Max).

Perhaps the advertised 0 degree capability is buried someplace within the 1.5 mm space between the two vertical lines, but after several days of moving the dial minutely to the left or right, I'm unable to find it.

Additionally, after reaching the coldest discernable temperature of 4 degrees once, it took me 2 days to find it again while continuing my hunt for the elusive advertised0 degrees.

This is especially frustrating since it takes about half a day or more for a temperature change to be reached within the freezer after moving the thermostat dial -- and when you move it, you don't know for certain if you're making it colder or warmer.
Which is to say, this isn't a particular fast appliance: The manual recommends not introducing frozen food to the freezer until it's been turned to the coldest setting (wherever that is) for at least 2 hours after turning it on. That seems wildly optimistic to me. In practice, it takes roughly 5 hours to freeze undersized 1" ice cubes from power-up using the tray bundled with this freezer.

To its credit, the EchoStar is fine as a refrigerator, and fine as a freezer as long as you aren't picky about hitting the the normally recommended 0 degrees for frozen foods.
But sorry, it should not require several days to find the coldest temperature on a device by nudging a dial back and forth within a space of a milimeter. And oddly enough, even without the instruction booklet telling me to do so, I fully expect "Max" to be colder than "Min", and not be actually located at some microscopicly ambiguous point between the two.

"Just turn the thermostat to select the appropriate temperature for your application!"
Yeah. Duh.

Sanyo SR-4912M 5-Cubic-Feet Counter High All Refrigerator with Platinum Door Review

I originally purchased the Sanyo SR-4912Mrefrigerator in November 2007.Ice collected on the back of the refrigerator and ALL my food froze.Since there is no authorized repair company in my area, Sanyo replaced it with a new refrigerator which worked fairly well for about 7 months.I bought a digital thermometer with an inside probe so that I could obtain a more accurate reading (I checked the accuracy of the thermometer with other thermometers and refrigerators).The temperature fluctuates from the 20's F. to the 50's F. and freezes my food.The highest safe temperature for a refrigerator is 40 F.The Sanyo rep at 800-421-5013 said that it is in the 50's when it is defrosting.I challenge that the auto defrost cycle should take 4-6-8 hours--if this is how the Sanyo refrigerator functions, then they are putting food in the danger zone for bacteria to grow and cause food poisoning. I was informed that the warranty on the original refrigerator has expired and, therefore, this replacement refrigerator has no warranty coverage, except for the compressor. The Sanyo rep could not understand why I am upset. Since I now have had two (2) Sanyo SR-4912M refrigerators, and neither of them has functioned adequately, I think this speaks volumes to the lack of quality and DANGER TO HEALTH of this refrigerator. Obviously, I do NOT RECOMMEND this refrigerator. If possible, I would give it NO stars.

Haier HSB03 Compact 2-2/3-Cubic-Foot Refrigerator/Freezer, White Review

I paid something like $97 for this while I was in a dorm room.
It's small.It's efficient.
The freezer isn't great, it sort of works, but I wouldn't depend on it for anything long term (I kept some hot pockets in there...).
The hose to the freezer gets in the way a bit in the back.

I use it for drinks now that I'm not at the dorm anymore.It can hold about 50 cans, if anyone cares.

Nothing really *wrong* with it.It's just not full of features or have an awesomely-planned out design.

Igloo FR180 1.7-Cu-Ft Stainless Steel Door Refrigerator Review

For the most part, this refridgerator has done a good job keeping the drinks cold, and the size is reasonable: small on the outside, big on the inside, perfect for the dorm room. The interior is sound and the temperature is very cold, even on the minimum setting.

So why did it lose three stars? Because of one minor flaw, and one serious problem. The minor flaw is that while the fridge keeps the things inside cold, the top and sides get uncomfortably warm. Not enough to set anything on fire, but definitely not the thing you want to put your bare hand on for long. Good if you want to keep lunch warm though.

As for the serious problem-- the pipe in the back gets really, really cold. After running this for three weeks, my mother noticed that the fridge was leaking water. Upon further inspection, I noticed that it wasn't a leak...it was water dripping from MELTING ICE THAT HAD FORMED around one of the pipes in the back of the fridge, just outside of the insulation that had wrapped around the pipe. The chunk was about an inch and a half in diameter, and looked like a chunk of white foam wrapped around the pipe.

It took me 15 minutes to ease the ice off, then as I was inspecting the pipe under the insulating cover, another chunk of ice popped out. All told, it took about 20 minutes to get the mess handled, but I'm glad my mother noticed the water dripping when she did, otherwise, I fear that the fridge might have short circuited and cost us $100 in the process.

EDIT: In regards to the ice--the refridgerator's parts seem to be watertight, so you don't have to worry about the ice harming it. I do recommend that, should you buy this fridge, to either put some foam/insulation around the pipe to reinforce the one already present, or, more simply, just putting a tray under the ice to catch the drips.

Haier 3.9 Cu Ft Fridge W Full Sz Freezer Black Review

It's on sale this week at Target for $109, so I thought I'd write a review in case anyone wants to get one cheap without having to pay shipping.

Perfect size for one person--maybe even 2. I would have liked a bigger freezer compartment, but it's bigger than it looks. At a medium setting the frozen foods stay frozen, and the refrigerated foods are plenty cold. The thermostat actually works.

This is a real fridge with a compressor, not some cheap piece of junk.

Haier HNSB02 1.7 Cu-Ft Refrigerator/Freezer, White Review

The refrigerator works very well. As per the instructions make sure to wait 24 hours before turning it on. It arrived without damage and keeps the temperature just fine. Noise level is acceptable (nothing amazing, but its not bad either).

The packaging is in fact attrocious. There is literally no foam padding of any kind. Amazon packs its books better than Haier packs its fridge. Only order if you have Amazon Prime - upgrade it to overnight shipping ($3.99) and your order is unlikely to arrive with any damage. The less time in shipping, the less likely you are to see damage.

Other than that, this is a great mini-fridge especially given the price.

Haier HNSE05BB 4-3/5-Cubic-Feet Compact Refrigerator/Freezer, Black/Stainless Review

I purchased this refrigerator for my office. It is to be shared by a group of 5 people, so I wanted one that was a little bigger than the typical compacts. I paid for overnight deliverly as others had suggested. The unit arrived in a box that had been previously opened. I was a bit worried when I removed the item from the box. It had some large dents on the side, but was otherwise ok. Once I plugged it in, I realized there were bigger issues. The motor was very loud and was cycling constantly. It would run for seven minutes and then would be off for four minutes, then on for seven, off for four - yes I actually timed it. Everytime the unit came on it startled me. At first I thought that once the motor broke in, that it would become quiet. That did not happen. After having the unit for 24 hours and spilling a cup of coffee on my desk from my rattled nerves, I called Amazon for a replacement unit.

The new refrigerator arrived the next day. Once again, it arrived in a box that had previously been opened. The replacement had a large dent on the door, but otherwise works great. It is so quiet. I barely notice it when the motor is running. What a difference! I actually check it on occasion to make sure that it is working because I don't notice it at all. I switched doors with the first refrigerator and now I have a unit that has no significant dents and it doesn't interrupt my work environment. The actual refrigerator is nice looking and has a lot of interior space. After the experience with the first one, I am a bit concerned about the reliability, but for now, I am satisfied.

Sunpentown Double Door Refrigerators Review

My decision for a compact refrigerator was a double door design. Separate freezer and refrigerator.
I highly recommend this product and this brand (Air Purifiers USA). After ordering the product, I contacted the manufacture (via the email confirmation details), and asked about the color options. White on white vs. Stainless on black. (I read them on the product description page, but was not able to make the selection during checkout). The gentlemen suggested putting the order on hold for 2 hours, he then contacted the warehouse, determined availability, and called me back and I selected Stainless on black. The order arrived in 3 days using regular shipping and the box was very well packaged. In fact, the original packing carton was inserted into a slightly larger carton (with good padding) and the entire packing was first rate.
The refrigerator is a thing of beauty. A full size look in a compact size unit. Stainless front with black box. The top has a convenient molded tray, designed to be used as a 'spill proof' counter top. The topside is large enough to hold coffee maker, cups, etc. and will never scratch.
Time will tell if this unit will perform as expected. My confidence is high and I am a very pleased customer.

Sanyo SR-3770S Counter-High Refrigerator, Black and Stainless-Steel Review

... foregoing the two reviews about shipping damage, I thought I'd try ordering this product for several reasons:

1) The hi-res dealer images of it from Sanyo.com made it look like one sexy fridge
2) The energy rating was good
3) I knew if the product did arrive damaged, Amazon would replace it, or refund my money anyway
4) I have Amazon Prime, so I figured paying $3.99 for overnight shipping would also make the delivery people think this was a special product, since it was going overnight, and not being sent across the country via Ground shipping, and abused in the process.

Well, the product arrived today, and initially, I thought, "This can't be good."

The box was extremely tattered... and the top was ripped open. I also heard rattling as the FedEx man helped me carry it up the stairs. Then he left, without even getting a signature. Oh, and at my front door the FedEx man just dropped the box on the ground in front of me.

I opened the box upstairs, and saw horrible, horrible packaging, as others have mentioned. The box was all beat up, and several of the inch or less thick padding was cracked and damaged.

Luckily, the fridge seemed to make it through intact... no dents, and it worked. The rattling as I carried it was the compressor... I still don't know if this is normal though.

These fridges are indeed shipped on a pallet, you can see that from the shipping sticker from Sanyo to Amazon's Nevada warehouse. Three fridges per pallet. All Amazon does is stick a FedEx/UPS sticker on these boxes, and ship them off. If I didn't get this sent overnight, I can almost guarantee the fridge would've beat beat to hell going ground from Nevada to New York.

As for this part of the item description,
"To keep the refrigerator looking brand new, its stainless-steel door has a clear acrylic coating that eliminates fingerprints and is easy to keep clean."

Well, it won't be happening for me, as the clear acrylic coating came ripped halfway down the upper right corner of the fridge, so I really had no choice but to rip all the rest of it off.

The fridge works, and it DOES look amazingly sexy, but unless you have Prime, or want to pay for expedited shipping, this will almost certainly come damaged until Amazon decides to start packaging these adequately. And really, I don't see why they don't, because it's just a hassle for the end customer, and an expensive dime on their end to pay for return shipping, and then shipping again for a replacement.
