GE GSHS6PGYSS Review

GE GSHS6PGYSSI am a little biased as a relative helps make GE motors.I have owned this for 5 months now.It replaced a used Frigidaire I had for a short time, which was 14 years old.It really replaced a very old, very small top freezer refrigerator I had for 16 years.

The GE is quiet. The compressor makes little noise. It is on the wall opposite our bedroom.I do not hear it in the bedroom. It's not an annoying noise. It is just barely audible in the kitchen.

This is real stainless.Keeping it fingerprint clean is a chore with young kids.We just let it go and clean it on the weekend.Takes about 10 minutes or so using stainless cleaner to make it sharp again.Without kids this would probably not be an issue.

The water maker and ice maker work very well. The filter gives the water a good taste.

The layout of the compartments is excellent for our needs, as you can see by the pictures. It has more than enough room for our use.

If we overload the freezer, the door will sometimes not completely close. The door open sensor does not always sense this. This results in ice build up inside the freezer, and condensation on the outside. Don't overload the freezer and this doesn't happen.

We got an excellent deal on this model.I feel we got a great fridge for the money.

LG Kitchen Series : LFX25980ST 24.7 cu. ft. Freestanding French Door Refrigerator - Stainless Steel Review

LG Kitchen Series : LFX25980ST 24.7 cu. ft. Freestanding French Door Refrigerator - Stainless SteelWhen we remodeled our kitchen in 2006 we had the following criteria for our new refrigerator: counter depth, water dispenser in the door and ice maker (not necessarily in the door)
After many hours of research, both online and at different stores we selected an LG French door model with freezer on the bottom.

After it was installed we noticed that the temperature showed over 90 degrees, whereas the room was about 72 degrees. Also the water dispenser flowed very slowly. According to the manual you were supposed to pull out the unit and vacuum the back. Since the unit had just been installed we called support and they referred us to the authorized tech who came out to check it. He then told us that the fridge is designed to be free-standing in the room, not "pushed" in the space between the cabinets. And then the temperature gauge would function correctly. Note - the unit is NOT built-in. The water trickle from the dispenser was working as designed.

About one year later, yes, right as the warranty had expired in 2007, a small, thumbnail sized plastic tab broke off the bottom wide drawer- almost $300.00 in parts and labor to replace.

A few weeks ago, in September 2009, the plastic frame that holds the bottom glass shelf (over the two half size drawers) broke in the front left corner and it is now held together with duct tape. Two weeks later another tiny plastic part that holds the lid to the left most drawer.

When it comes to the general construction and design of the drawers it is substandard and LG should be ashamed of themselves. The half drawers are designed for fruits and veggies, but if you put anything heavier than lettuce in them, they fall off the convoluted rails and you need an engineering degree to put them back in.

Support and customer service assures us that we are the only ones ever complaining about this. Replacing plastic parts is `standard maintenance'. It seems the design of metal rails and bars in combination with tiny plastic tabs and attachments is a very bad combination

If you put bottles weighing too much in the doors they do not close properly and you have to give them an extra forceful push. LG service and support has not provided any service, just excuses.

On a scale of 1-10 we put LG at about a minus 5- never fully functioning, insufficient materials design, and poor service satisfaction.

GE PGCS1PJXSS 20.7CF French-Door Refrigerator W/ Armoire Double Drawer Review

GE PGCS1PJXSS 20.7CF French-Door Refrigerator W/ Armoire Double DrawerI recently purchased the expensive GE 25 cu ft stainless frig with french doors and two bottom freezer drawers for my new home. The right door has to be slammed to close it when the left door is already closed.Whenever I go back to open the frig I notice it is sticking open.It is a design flaw that two service techs have verified.I have been battling GE for three weeks to give me a different model/type frig that actually works with no luck so far.The customer service department goes through the motions but will not acknowlege the flaw and do the right thing. The best I can hope for is to get a replacement of the same model with the same problem.

Be sure to test your GE french door frig in a showroom before making such a big purchase or you may regret it, like me.No other brands of french door frigs have this problem. The Maytag french door models, also sold under Whirlpool and KitchenAid brands, have a good reputation.

Frigidaire Professional Series : FPHC2399KF 36in 22.6 cu. ft. Counter-Depth SidebySide Refrigerator Review

Frigidaire Professional Series : FPHC2399KF 36in 22.6 cu. ft. Counter-Depth SidebySide RefrigeratorEDITED to add comments after 6 months of use:

People continue to curse at the stupid design of the water dispenser, and continue to spill water all over the place. Now I am also noticing that the plastic that covers the buttons for ICE and WATER on the panel has cracked and split (after 6 freaking months!).Reducing the star rating from original 3 stars to 2.I would NOT recommend this unit, especially for the asking price. If you can find one on clearance, maybe, but again, there is NOTHING special about this that qualifies it to be priced above $1K imo.
**********

Replaced a GE fridge with this model:

Due to my space limitations, I narrowed it down to the similar Kitchenaid model (kind of wish I had gone for this), and the Whirlpool at the same level.Bought online sight unseen fwiw.

Honestly, I don't see why the "PROFESSIONAL" designation on this.Nothing about the quality makes me think it's anything other than a very average refrigerator.Cheap, plastic bins just like every other average unit I have seen.

PROS:
- Best thing about this is the good looking AND practical stainless steel finish. It's great really - NO smudging (except on the handles) AND it's magnetic (something rare in SS models).

- "theater" lighting...when you open the doors at night, supposedly it doesn't blind you immediately, but rather gradually, as the lights ramp up

- Has a changeable air filter.I like this...no more arm and hammer boxes taking up space and tipping over. OTOH, another filter to replace.

- External, digital temp controls for both sides.I like the idea of this...but in reality, how often are you going to be changing the temperature? If you have to change it a lot, maybe there is a problem with the thermostat?

- this is a small thing, but I really like that some of the side compartments in the fridge have a non slip surface.Very nice touch.Instead of your jars of jelly sliding around and clanking into each other (except when the door closes, see below), things stay nicely in place.CONS:
- OMG THE DOOR SLAM.This one kills me, and for such a small thing, makes such a big negative impression because it's EVERY time you deal with the fridge. When you close the door, there is NO "cushion" for lack of a better or more technical word.On my very low end GE (and most every fridge out there for that matter), there is a built in governor I guess that slows the speed of the door so it doesn't just slam closed.I think what happens is that the resistance is just greater as you approach the closed position.Whatever that feature is, WP for some reason decided to leave it out on this fridge (maybe none of theirs have this, no idea). It is sooo annoying. We have gotten used to it more or less, and most of the time we carefully and slowly close the door so it doesn't rattle the whole kitchen. But anybody else (who of course is also used to the normal, slower fridge door behavior) closing the fridge door is always startled and usually jumps when the door SLAMS shut with a huge rattle. This is just piss poor design imo, and is a big negative. I am sure we will eventually get used to it, but shouldn't have to.

- another horrible, non standard design implementation re: water dispener.Unless you have an extremely wide cup (think wide coffee mug or even soup bowl/mug, you can't just push your glass into the unit expecting water to hit.Nooooo.Because of the design, any normal rim sized glass will be overshot by the water squirter, so you have to wrap your hand around the glass and then insert, to make up for the space.Never seen another fridge with this problem, and like the door slam issue, because it's so unusual, every time someone not living in our house goes for water, they end up getting it all over them and the floor. That tells you right there it's not just me being picky.I swear they designed the thing and never actually tested it in a real live situation. Inexcusable imo.

Because these two things have relatively easy workarounds, I am not going to go into below average territory.I doubt there is a perfect fridge out there, but I do wish I had gone for the Kitchenaid.I wonder if their engineers made similar mistakes.

3 stars, barely, and that is assuming that this unit will last many years w/o probs.

IMO, look at the Kitchenaid before buying this one.

Whirlpool : GS6NHAXVY 36in 25.6 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator - Monochromatic Stainless Steel Review

Whirlpool : GS6NHAXVY 36in 25.6 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator - Monochromatic Stainless SteelWe purchased this fridge three months ago to replace an older GE Profile fridge. We are overall happy with the fridge although there has been one consistent issue with the ice maker.

Note: This fridge is overall the same as the all stainless model except the sides are painted a matching gray (instead of the sides being complete stainless).Having seen the paint I don't know why anyone opts for the "full wrap" expense as it looks great either way.

Pros:
-Looks: Very nice looking, overall the front fit and finish of this fridge is excellent. The build quality throughout is on par with any fridge in the class.
-Energy efficient:This system is a very energy efficient fridge. As a matter of fact it's rated as about as energy efficient a fridge as you can buy in the states (estimated annual cost to run around $65)
-Excellent features: The measuring water dispenser, options for lighting, cooling, etc on the front control panel are easy to use and well designed. The large container fill spout works great.
-Bins: This thing has huge bins and they are very easy to see in to.

Cons:
-Ice Maker: The in-door ice maker is good.It makes a lot of ice.The problem is that the fill spout on ours (where the water fills the freeze tray) seems to ice up pretty consistently which causes water to rain down in the freezer and coat everything. This requires a complete many many hour defrost to get all the clogged ice bits to thaw and drip out.I'm pretty upset about this as this is a $2,000+ fridge
-Space:Not as roomy as our old GE.I believe this is because of the shelf layout in the fridge.Overall it's good but not excellent. We have always felt like it needed another shelf.
-Silly can holder:American fridges seem to be packed with soda can holders these days (much like cars). This fridge is not ludicrous in the number it has (like some). However the can holder at the top of the fridge door is almost completely useless. The way it holds cans (not that we have any!) is such that if the door is opened or closed quickly the cans fall out (and on your toes or food). My wife tried yogurt and a number of things up there but since the slots are can shaped and we don't really drink beer or soda from cans.. it's a useless shelf
-In-door shelf space:Our old GE Profile could hold a huge amount in it's door. This fridge holds much less.I'm not sure if it's all the space lost to smooth shelf angles or what but we had a heck of time time transplanting what easily fit in our GE to the Whirlpools door.

All in all I like the fridge.Fridges in this class are a balancing act of space, looks, features (ice maker etc), and how you like to store things (french vs side by side vs over-under).This is a good "premium" grade fridge that I would buy over a KitchenAide any day.Although with the ice maker problems in the first three months I'm wishing I'd have opted for the GE (in the same price band).

On a side note Whirlpool has an EXCELLENT online FAQ support section on their website that has cured more than a few of our little "what the heck?!" moments and turned them in to "OH I GET IT!".

KitchenAid : KFIS25XVMS Refrigerator Review

KitchenAid : KFIS25XVMS RefrigeratorThis refrigerator replaced one of those double door refrigerators that had 5 freezer shelves which were too narrow to accomodate frozen pizzas or a 22 lb turkey. I hated the old fridge. It looked nice, but was pretty useless and impractical.
My new Kitchenaid refrigerator/freezer is great. Food items are clearly visible and there is plenty of storage space on both doors that allow for varied heigths depending on your needs. Electronic controls allows for consistent temp. Vegetable and fruit storage is accomodated with large bins and coldcuts and cheeses have their own storage drawers. There is an alarm that alerts you if the doors are not properly closed and a constant readout indicating temperature. A water dispenser is mounted on an exterior door which I don't use much.
The lower mounted freezer has two deep baskets that hold pretty much everything with an adjustable slide for more efficient storage.
The stainless steel exterior glistens and offers a lot of flexibility re: home decor. The exterior does require a weekly cleaning with stainless cleaner.
I like the quality, performance, and appearance and bought as second similar unit without the water dispenser.

Soleus Air MC-88M Indoor/Outdoor Party Refrigerator, Silver Review

Soleus Air MC-88M Indoor/Outdoor Party Refrigerator, SilverThis is a unique product in it's price range. We wanted a deck fridge ready for outdoor use and this appeared to be just that. As always, Amazon service was fantastic but after 3 months of service, the device began to run noisily and quit working altogether shortly after that. We were startled to examine the warranty service offered by Soleus Air and learned that in order to have warranty coverage we'd need to ship this device back to California which cost us $147. This is half the cost of the device and was a big disappointment. I suspect the value in this device will be fully realized if the company returns a unit that lasts more than a few months. If this unit fails again, it will be out of warranty (for what that is worth given the return shipping costs) and we'll likely have a fancy stainless steel ice bucket instead of a powered cooler. The physical appearance and functional design is attractive and the unit was the talk of our summer gatherings just beware of quality and the finer points of the warranty and hope your's lasts longer than ours did.
